Michael Bloom is een klassiek geschoolde bluesgitarist/ singer-songwriter, geboren in Chicago en momenteel verblijvend in Santa Fé, NM. Hij speelt blues in alle vormen, poëtisch zoals Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed en Mississippi John Hurt, lyrisch zoals BB King en Otis Rush en ritmisch zoals Muddy Waters en Little Milton.

‘Whisper in the Wind’ is een album dat gedeeltelijk opgenomen werd in Chicago met blueslegende Mary Lane, frontman van The No Static Blues Band, waar Bloom ook nog deel van uit maakte. Er staan 11 tracks op het album, waarvan 8 originele nummers. In de 3 covers brengt hij ode aan Furry Lewis (“Brownsville”), Johnny Clyde Copeland (“Old Man Blues” en Robert Johnson (“Dust My Broom”). Op het album wordt Bloom begeleid door The Blues Prophecy: Brant Leeper (piano, orgel), Michael Chavez (drums) & Robert Trumpy (bas).

De opener “Time on My Hands” is een prima swampy en funky nummer, dat wat loom swingt, met Bloom op slidegitaar en Michael Damini op 2de gitaar. Daarna volgt de titelsong, een relaxte shuffle met Sumito “Ariyo” Ariyoshi (zoals Mary Lane ook een Chicago Blues Hall of Fame Inductee!) op piano. “Just Can’t Win” sluit hier goed bij aan. Het is nog een ontspannen nummer met Michael Bloom’s snijdende gitaar naast het soulvolle orgel van Ariyoshi. Op “I Remember Love” zit Brant Leeper achter de piano om het tempo helpen hoog te houden en hoor je even Kristina Campbell. Op “Till I Met You” en  “No Luck at All” wordt het funky. Het motto van Bloom is hier “Bad luck is better than no luck at all…”. Het is een motto, dat Albert King vroeger in ook zijn “Born Under A Bad Sign” verdedigde. Bloom en Tim Arnold halen alles uit hun gitaren (zowel elektrisch als akoestisch) op “Lisa”, een ruige blues rocker, wat deze instrumental speciaal maakt. Er blijft nog “I Ain’t Got the Blues” over. Hier krijgt Bloom’s gitaarspel alle ruimte. In “Dust My Broom” is het Bloom die dit keer de akoestische slidegitaar omgehangen heeft.

Bluesrock fans kunnen ‘Whisper in the Wind’, het laatste album van Michael Bloom and The Blues Prophecy, zonder aarzelen aanschaffen, want dit is een overtuigend en degelijke bluesrock.
